The work of documentary filmmaker and photographer Artes Johnson is currently on display in the Nebraska East Union 3rd floor loft gallery in celebration of Black history in Nebraska.

Throughout February, events and activities across campus will dive into the history of Black Americans in Nebraska, promote wellness, and celebrate African and African American culture.


Loft Gallery: Descendants of DeWitty: The Audacious Nebraska Saga

The work of documentary filmmaker and photographer Artes Johnson is currently on display in celebration of Black history in Nebraska. The 20 images in the exhibit highlight the daily life of Black settlers in the village of DeWitty in Cherry County. Located in Nebraska’s Sandhills region, DeWitty was Nebraska’s “largest and most permanent colony” of African American homesteaders, existing from 1907 until about 1936.


Cultural Cuisine Night: African & African-American Culture Month

February 7  |  4:30 to 8 p.m.  |  Willa Cather Dining Complex

Enjoy fun, fellowship, and choose from more than 10 unique dishes themed around African & African-American Culture Month. For all students with a Meal Plan, this event is included. International students without a meal plan can register for tickets — only 150 tickets are available. View meal prices for all other guests.

Celebrate love, friendship, and culture at the annual Love Gala. Dress formally or in cultural attire and enjoy each other’s company through music. This year the Love Gala will be in partnership with TRIO and WHT. RSVP to attend.


Xtreme Hip Hop with Latoya Thomas

February 20  |  5 p.m.  |  Campus Recreation Center, Fitness Room

Join this group exercise class for an energetic step aerobics and cardio fitness experience. The class is free, but reservation for attendance is required. Register in advance to reserve a spot.


Don’t Stress Your Heart!

February 24  |  12 to 1 p.m.  |  OASIS Lounge

Stop by the OASIS Lounge to learn about the risk factors that stress can do to your heart health and how to relieve the stress. Grab a heart-shaped stress ball and enter a giveaway for a chance to win a Husker water bottle.


Black Greek 101

February 20  |  6 to 8 p.m.  |  Nebraska Union, Platte River South Room

Learn more about the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) or commonly referred to as Divine Nine (D9) organization. In this seminar, you will learn about all nine organizations and the current chapters that are on the University of Nebraska - Lincoln’s yard. In order to obtain membership into any of these organization's you must attend a Black Greek 101 session. RSVP on NVolveU.
