Free Skate Night Tradition Continues

At the second Free Skate Night of the semester held Friday, Oct. 7, more than 200 Nebraska students celebrated the end of the week with an evening of ice skating at the Breslow Center. Some attendees were Free Skate Night regulars and were familiar with ice skating; for others, it was their first experience on skates.

On Thursday, Nov. 10, Campus NightLife host Relax and Re-Energize, an event to help students take a break in the midst of the busy semester. At the event, students enjoyed aqua massages, a smoothie bar, and oxygen bar and more. With the relaxation on the mind, we asked students who attended the event how they de-stress.

Student-Athletes from 10 States Visit Nebraska for Regional Flag Football Tournament

From Nov. 4-6, 36 teams from 18 colleges across 10 states visited the Nebraska campus to compete in the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association’s (NIRSA) regional flag football tournament. Competitors included four teams from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Students vied for the chance to travel to the University of West Florida to compete in NIRSA’s National Flag Football Championships in January 2017.

Nebraska continues to add to nation-leading Wasson Award winners

Four University of Nebraska-Lincoln students received the William N. Wasson Student Leadership and Academic Award presented by NIRSA, the national association for campus recreation leadership, during the association’s annual conference held February 21–24, 2017 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. Nebraska leads the nation with 78 recipients since the award’s inception in 1993 and is the only higher-ed institution in the country to have at least one Wasson Award winner every year the award has been given.

UAAD selects Robin Bowman for Floyd S. Oldt Award

The University Association for Administrative Development (UAAD) presented Robin Bowman with the Floyd S. Oldt Award at its Founders’ Day luncheon on Feb. 15. The award recognizes employees who demonstrate exceptional service and dedication to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

RSO workshops provide student groups with tools for success

Student Involvement hosted recognized student organization (RSO) workshops on risk management, motivation and inspiration, civil discourse and navigating the Student Organization Financial Services (SOFS).

Director of Risk Management and Insured Benefits Gayle Schanou, Outdoor Adventure Center Coordinator Todd Grier and Coordinator of Fraternity Life Jon Gayer led the risk management workshop on Feb. 14. The presenters discussed perceived risk and how to be prepared for unexpected situations.

Used shoe drive through April 28

Students, faculty, staff, and the community are invited to drop off used athletic shoes and soccer shoes at the three campus recreation facilities – Rec & Wellness Center, Outdoor Adventures Center, and Campus Rec Center – from March 1 to April 28. Collection boxes are located in the atrium of each building.

Silhasek awarded as outstanding leader by National Collegiate Water Ski Association

Margaret Silhasek, a member of the Nebraska Water Ski Club and senior broadcasting and economics double-major from Byron, Minn., received the National Collegiate Water Ski Association (NCWSA)’s female Outstanding Leadership Award at the USA Water Ski awards banquet in Lakeland, FL.

No matter the subject, students seek resources to help them make informed decisions –that’s why several departments in Student Affairs have taken to blogging. The online platform easily allows departments to share personal stories, tips and tricks directly with Nebraska students.

The blog topics vary, but together the stories promote a campus-wide culture grounded in a multi-dimensional model of wellness.

Congratulations to Deb Johnson, senior associate director at Campus Recreation, for earning the distinguished Carl A. Donaldson Award from the University Association for Administrative Development.

UNL Adds Four to List of Wasson Winners

Four University of Nebraska-Lincoln students received the William N. Wasson Student Leadership and Academic Award presented by NIRSA, the national association for campus recreation leadership. UNL now leads the nation with 74 recipients since the award’s inception in 1993 and is the only higher education institution in the nation to have at least one Wasson Award winner every year the award has been given.

$1.9 Million in Grants and Sponsorships Fund Student Affairs Programs

Six departments and more than 16 programs in the Division of Student Affairs benefitted from $1,914,646 in grant and sponsorship funds during the 2016 calendar year.

"We are excited to report how successful some of our departments have been in their efforts to gain financial assistance. Most of these funds go directly to help our students,” said Vice Chancellor Juan N. Franco.

Homecoming Gets a Running Start with a 5K

A sunny sky and gentle breeze made for perfect race conditions as more than 300 runners gathered north of Harper Hall at 4 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 26. Sponsored by Campus Recreation and the Residence Hall Association, the Homecoming 5K race loop followed the Billy Wolff Trail and returned to Harper Hall for the finish.

Campbell Honored with New Student Affairs Advocate Award

On Sept. 30, the Student Affairs Staff Council hosted the annual Fall Celebration for the Division of Student Affairs. More than 150 employees and graduate students attended the event which included introductions of new employees, introductions of Staff Council members and an update from Dr. Franco on the state of the division. This year’s event also included a performance by Boots & Cats, an all-female a cappella student group, and the presentation of a new Student Affairs Student Advocate Award.
