Monday, April 2, 2018 Student employee earns post-professional scholarship

Kate Suelter, a senior from Omaha, working at Campus Recreation in Injury Prevention and Care is a recipient of the Mid-America Athletic Trainers’ Association post-professional scholarship.

Suelter has worked for Campus Recreation for nearly three years where she serves as a first responder while also leading peers as a teaching assistant and student organization officer. She credits her time as a student employee with developing confidence in her abilities.

Monday, December 4, 2017 Intramural flag football teams head to national competition

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s intramural co-rec team ‘Diablos’ and women’s team ‘Huskers’ won their divisions in the NIRSA’s Regional Flag Football Tournament hosted November 11-12, 2017 at Cook Pavilion. Both teams receive automatic bids to compete at the NIRSA National Tournament on January 5-7, 2018 at the University of West Florida in Pensacola. Thirty-three teams from 16 states competed in the regional tournament with divisions for men’s, women’s, co-rec, and Special Olympic teams.

Thursday, June 8, 2017 Students named Intramural Sports’ Athletes of the Year

Brenda Nguyen and Levi Gipson earned Athlete of the Year (AOTY) honors for their play in Campus Recreation’s intramural sports program. Seventy-one intramural events across the spectrum of sport and games are available to students to foster positive social interactions, stress-relief, and the spirit-of-competition; Over 7,000 students participated this past year.

Friday, April 21, 2017 Staff celebrate the last Franco Friday

On Friday, April 21, the last Franco Friday networking event took place at the Recreation and Wellness Center on East Campus. Prior to the event, Student Affairs Staff Council members encouraged City Campus employees to take the bus to East Campus to broaden their campus knowledge.

The event took place in the new test kitchen where Campus Recreation offered Scooter’s coffee and fruit and yogurt parfaits to attendees.

Margaret Silhasek, a member of the Nebraska Water Ski Club and senior broadcasting and economics double-major from Byron, Minn., received the National Collegiate Water Ski Association (NCWSA)’s female Outstanding Leadership Award at the USA Water Ski awards banquet in Lakeland, FL.

In addition to her passion for competitive water skiing, Silhasek is president of the Nebraska Sport Club Council, writes for the National Collegiate Water Ski Association (NCWSA) website, and is the secretary of for the NCWSA’s Great Plains Conference.

Students, faculty, staff, and the community are invited to drop off used athletic shoes and soccer shoes at the three campus recreation facilities – Rec & Wellness Center, Outdoor Adventures Center, and Campus Rec Center – from March 1 to April 28. Student Involvement hosted recognized student organization (RSO) workshops on risk management, motivation and inspiration, civil discourse and navigating the Student Organization Financial Services (SOFS).

Director of Risk Management and Insured Benefits Gayle Schanou, Outdoor Adventure Center Coordinator Todd Grier and Coordinator of Fraternity Life Jon Gayer led the risk management workshop on Feb. 14. The presenters discussed perceived risk and how to be prepared for unexpected situations.

Monday, February 27, 2017 Nebraska continues to add to nation-leading Wasson Award winners

Four University of Nebraska-Lincoln students received the William N. Wasson Student Leadership and Academic Award presented by NIRSA, the national association for campus recreation leadership, during the association’s annual conference held February 21–24, 2017 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. Nebraska leads the nation with 78 recipients since the award’s inception in 1993 and is the only higher-ed institution in the country to have at least one Wasson Award winner every year the award has been given.

Tuesday, November 8, 2016 Student-Athletes from 10 States Visit Nebraska for Regional Flag Football Tournament

From Nov. 4-6, 36 teams from 18 colleges across 10 states visited the Nebraska campus to compete in the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association’s (NIRSA) regional flag football tournament. Competitors included four teams from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Students vied for the chance to travel to the University of West Florida to compete in NIRSA’s National Flag Football Championships in January 2017.

At the second Free Skate Night of the semester held Friday, Oct. 7, more than 200 Nebraska students celebrated the end of the week with an evening of ice skating at the Breslow Center. Some attendees were Free Skate Night regulars and were familiar with ice skating; for others, it was their first experience on skates.
