Student-led prep powers Big Event success
Calm on the surface, a flurry of activity awaits as the student co-chairs make the final push in organizing the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s largest student-run community service project. Their leadership, magnified through 95 other student leaders, will allow more than 2,500 student, faculty and staff volunteers to lend a hand at 238 sites across Lincoln on April 6.

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Interfraternity Council has unanimously agreed to ban hard alcohol from chapter events — except when served by a licensed third-party vendor.

Through the Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska Community Outreach Program, UNL Kappa Delta sorority members have an opportunity to inspire the next generation of strong women — a chance that can come with responsibility. Greek chapters host annual trick-or-treat for kids
Fraternities and sororities at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln will host Greek Street Trick-or-Treat from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 26. The event will include 21 Greek houses participating along with 10 candy booths in the Nebraska Union.

'Greek Getaway’ brings 120 potential fraternity members to campus
Greek Getaway provides a single weekend for incoming students interested in fraternities to visit the campus and attend multiple fraternity recruitment events. In total, fraternities hosted around 75 events during the weekend this year.

Nebraska Greek community welcomes a new Latina sorority interest group
Members of EMERALD collected feminine hygiene products to donate to the UNITE fundraiser. UNITE will donate the goods to Native American reservations where sanitary feminine products are often unaffordable and unattainable, affecting their school attendance.

Greek leaders meet with administrators at ‘Friday Afternoon Collaboration’
Fraternity and sorority presidents at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln kicked off the semester’s ‘Friday Afternoon Collaborations’ program by meeting with Assistant Chief of Police Hassan Ramzah and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Jake Johnson on January 26.
A result of the Greek Vitality movement, the session was an opportunity to increase communication and strengthen the relationship between the Greek organizations and the university.

Delta Sigma Theta and Sigma Lambda Beta earn Stroll Off top honors
Hosted by the Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services (OASIS) in conjunction with the National Pan-Hellenic Council and Multicultural Greek Councils at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, this year’s event included three fraternities and three sororities competing for recognition plaques and a cash prize.

Sororities and fraternities exceed campus average GPAs
The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life grade report from Spring 2017 shows that members of fraternities and sororities are out-performing their peers. The all-Greek female average of 3.438 surpassed the campus female grade point average of a 3.232. Similarly, the all-Greek male average of 3.141 exceeded the campus male grade point average of 2.952.

Beta Theta Pi fraternity at Nebraska earns international distinction
Beta Theta Pi fraternity at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln earned the Chapter Award of Distinction from the North-American Interfraternity Conference. This award recognizes high-functioning undergraduate fraternity chapters who are in compliance with NIC standards, seek to educate others about a values-based fraternity experience and maintain a healthy relationship with their respective inter/national organization.
The Beta Theta Pi chapter at Nebraska was one of seven fraternity chapters nationally to receive this honor.

Greek community donates $30,000 to ‘Nebraska by Heart’
Painted, tiled, colorful and creative hearts popped up around the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus this spring, but those in front of Greek chapters are unique. Most fraternities or sororities with a six-foot heart in their yard chose to become a sponsor for the Nebraska by Heart public art project celebrating the state’s sesquicentennial.

Nebraska Greek members show higher retention and graduation rates
A 2016 report from the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln shows Greek members possess higher first-year retention and graduation rates than their peers.
Incoming students who joined sororities in fall 2015 were retained at the university at 90.98 percent, a rate 7.88 percentage points higher than the female campus average for the same period. Similarly, the retention for men who joined fraternities was 88.95 percent, 7.65 points higher than the male campus average.

InvAsian showcases talents, celebrates diversity
Nebraska students and others from surrounding campuses joined the members of Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority, Inc. for InvAsian Under the Sea on Saturday, March 11. The sold-out talent show featured dance groups, singers, instrumentalists and strollers.
Sigma Psi Zeta required each of the 13 performers to submit a video audition to compete. Performers came not only from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln but from the University of Iowa, the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK) and the community as well.
