Thursday, November 7, 2019 Inclusion and diversity retreat to train student leaders

Aspiring student leaders at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln have an opportunity to learn how to incorporate diversity and inclusiveness into their leadership skills. Student leaders are invited to apply for the Inclusive Leadership Retreat on Sunday, Nov. 10, from 1 to 6 p.m. in the Willa Cather Dining Complex. The deadline to turn in an application is Thursday, Nov. 8, and there is space for up to 150 students.

FreeQuency will perform their slam poetry on topics such as gender-based and African American culture and issues on Friday, Nov. 8, in the Nebraska Union Ballroom at 7:30 p.m.

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s LGBTQA+ Resource Center has opened a new spot for Huskers to find free, gender-affirming clothing on campus.

The LGBTQA+ Resource Center is accepting donations for the Lavender Closet, which will provide students with free clothes that align with their gender identity.

Tuesday, October 15, 2019 UNITE spreads awareness of Native American culture

On Monday, members of the University of Nebraska Inter-Tribal Exchange strolled around campus, handing out flyers and telling the University of Nebraska-Lincoln community why they were celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead of Columbus Day. This is just one of the ways UNITE strives to educate students on Native American issues throughout the year.

A photo booth to combat negative messages will be set up from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 15-17 in the Nebraska Union. Participants can write, display and photograph the hate and negativity they want to erase from campus.

Sunday, October 6, 2019 Looking back: N150 Homecoming

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln combined historic campus traditions with modern twists to present a Husker homecoming like no other. Celebrating the university's 150th anniversary, the 2019 Homecoming featured an expanded slate of events, a rejuvenated Cornstock festival, the university's largest parade ever, a live performance by "The Voice" finalist Hannah Huston, and many family-friendly opportunities.

Saturday, October 5, 2019 Huskers celebrate pride, homecoming at Rainbow Ball

About 150 students attended the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's second annual Rainbow Ball, which was held the evening of Oct. 4 at Kauffman Hall. They nibbled on hors d'oeuvres, posed for silly pictures in the pride-themed photo booth and danced to music provided by the UNL DJ Club.

The Multicultural Center Hall of Fame awards are hosted by the Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services. The 2019 ceremony is Oct. 4 in the Gaughan Multicultural Center.

Four University of Nebraska–Lincoln alumni will be honored as the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center’s 2019 Hall of Fame class. Inductees are Rebekka Schlichting (Class of 2016), assistant director of Vision Maker Media; Marthaellen Florence (1980), director of community, Nebraska Educational Telecommunication; Ben Salazar (1973), activist for the Latino community; and Phat Nguyen (2018), platoon leader for the U.S. Army.

Recently, students across campus gathered near the Nebraska Union for Fiesta on the Green — an event celebrating Hispanic food, dance, music and more. The celebration was hosted by the Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. Multiple registered students organizations, including the Mexican American Student Association, attended the event. A courtroom drama play, “The Defamation Experience” touches on topics of race, social class, religion and gender.
