Six departments and more than 16 programs in the Division of Student Affairs benefitted from $1,914,646 in grant and sponsorship funds during the 2016 calendar year.
"We are excited to report how successful some of our departments have been in their efforts to gain financial assistance. Most of these funds go directly to help our students,” said Vice Chancellor Juan N. Franco.
Held April 21, the Lavender Graduation and Chancellor’s Awards for Outstanding Contributions to the GLBT Community honored achievements by members of the LGBTQA+ community at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The ceremony honored six undergraduates, four master’s degree graduate students and two doctoral graduate students. All are graduating members of the LGBTQA+ community who received certificates and commemorative rainbow tassels. A complete participant list is provided below.
Monday, April 11, 2016Conference Promotes Exploring Masculinity
For the second year in a row, the Men at Nebraska Conference invited conversation around the roles masculinities play in men’s’ lives. Held April 8, the conference included a short film screening, breakout sessions, a poster exhibition and a keynote address by Dr. Eric Lueshen. A Husker football alumnus, Lueshen shared his story of defying stereotypes as the first openly gay Division 1 college football player.

On July 22 the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals in partnership with the UNL LGBTQA+ Resource Center hosted a one-day national conference at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. More than one hundred attendees from as far as Massachusetts, California and Georgia joined together to discuss best practices for serving LGBTQ student populations.

More than 100 students gathered in the Unity Room at the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center on Thurs., Sept. 29, for the How to Do Drag Workshop. The LGBTQA+ Resource Center and the UNL Spectrum student organization hosted the event in place of a regular UNL Spectrum meeting. At the event, Michael Johnson and Trent Battershaw, experienced drag performers, taught attendees different types of drag and gave tips for on stage performance and how to choose the right name, music, makeup and clothes.
Students dominated an audience of more than 80 members of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln community who completed training for the QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Program on Sept. 20-21. Sponsored by the Women’s Center and the LGBTQA+ Resource Center, the voluntary training provided education on the warning signs and situational clues to take action in saving a life.
Since Oct. 8, the Women’s Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has been celebrating the UNL Week Without Violence. The center joined efforts with both on- and off-campus organizations to spread awareness of different forms of violence and make a stand against abuse.
All seats were filled five minutes before the start Night of the Living Drag Show on Friday, Oct. 28. When the show started, so many people had flooded the Centennial Room in the Nebraska Union that the emcee had to remind attendees to move away from the door because blocking the exit was a fire hazard.
In January 2017, the University Health Center will begin offering a Transgender Care Clinic. Dr. Jean Amoura, who brings 10 years of experience in transgender care and hormone treatment, will be the primary care provider for the clinic. On Wednesday, Nov. 16 from 4-5 p.m., the LGBTQA+ Resource Center is hosting a meet and greet with Dr. Amoura in the Nebraska Union, room 346.
On Feb. 28, the LGBTQA+ Resource Center hosted Survey and Slices, a fun, low-stress event where 30 students enjoyed free pizza as they completed the Center’s online Campus Climate Survey.
The survey, which consists of 150 questions and takes 30 minutes to complete, gives university staff and faculty a better understanding of how the campus climate affects LGBTQA+ students.
