Sports & Fitness Industry Association calls it the fastest growing sport in the U.S., growing nearly 40% between 2020 and 2022, to reach 4.8 million players. On November 18, UNL students can join the craze by playing in a free tournament on campus.

Campus Recreation’s Intramural Sports is hosting pickleball singles and doubles at the Rec & Wellness Center on East Campus, starting at 7 p.m.

There is no cost or preregistration required to play. Students wanting to participate should arrive by 7 p.m. to sign up.

Singles games will be in women’s, men’s and open leagues; doubles will be played in co-rec, women’s, men’s and open leagues.

Winners in each league will be awarded intramural championship t-shirts.

What is Pickleball and how is it played?

According to USA Pickleball, these are "The Basics":

  • A fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong.
  • Played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court and a slightly modified tennis net.
  • Played with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes.
  • Played as doubles or singles.
  • Can be enjoyed by all ages and skill levels
