Student participates in balance test at PT Month event at University of Nebraska-Lincoln

On Tuesday, Oct. 11, the University Health Center hosted Physical Therapy & You, an event to build awareness for physical therapy and the services provided at the University Health Center. As part of Physical Therapy Month, the event took place on the lawn in front of the UHC entrance where a pop-up tent provided shade for students learning exercises with the help of therapists.

“I learned how to stretch my hamstrings, even during class,” said Maria Chavez, a senior pre-pharmacy student. “This is super useful when carrying a heavy backpack all day.”

Physical therapists provided instruction on proper exercise techniques like doing squats without causing knee issues and stretching hamstrings to prevent back problems. A balance test provided a fun challenge as therapists helped participants evaluate their own steadiness.

Individuals who spun the giant wheel and participated in physical therapy trivia received a stress ball. Students also could enter a drawing to win University Health Center prizes like an exercise ball, a foam roller and a hot/cold pack.

“I think it’s important to create awareness for the health center because we provide a broad range of services beyond flu and cold season,” said Katie Groves, a Healthy Husker and member of the UHC Student Advisory Board. “We do offer physical therapy, vaccinations for studying abroad and mental health services – more broad than expected.”

In addition to physical therapy, students may be surprised to learn that the health center offers the medical clinic, an allergy clinic, a travel clinic, dental services, eye exams, radiology, dermatology, gynecology, orthopedics, counseling and psychological services and a pharmacy.
