Traditionally, Thanksgiving is a time when families gather together. To give students the opportunity to enjoy the holiday with their friends on campus, University Dining Services annually serves the traditional feast before the Thanksgiving break.

Each dining hall’s Thanksgiving menu is unique. For example, the Cather/Pound/Neihardt and East Campus dining halls place an emphasis on using locally-grown ingredients in meals. To ensure all vendors have adequate supplies like meat for the meal, the preparations begin as early as September.

“All of our staff really enjoy doing a special meal for the students,” said Pam Edwards, assistant director of Dining Services. “It’s our way of celebrating Thanksgiving with the students before they go home.”

Typically the meal is served on the Thursday before Thanksgiving break. However, with Math Day falling on that same Thursday, the meal was pushed one week earlier so the staff does not need to prepare the additional food for Math Day students and a special meal on the same day.

Whether students are going home for Thanksgiving or staying on campus, the meal is an opportunity for all to gather, celebrate, and reflect on what they are thankful for.

“Thanksgiving is a very special holiday because it’s unique to the United States,” said Edwards. “It’s a very warm family and friend celebration. I think we all need to take a step back and really think about that holiday a lot more than we do.”
