University Health Center simplifies requesting student presentations

Monday, August 28, 2017 University Health Center simplifies requesting student presentations

Cynthia Von Seggern, psychologist and group and outreach coordinator with CAPS, gives a presentation explaining counseling services available through the University Health Center managed by Nebraska Medicine.

In response to student feedback, the University Health Center has expanded its health and well-being presentation offerings to students for the 2017-18 academic year and has refined the booking process to make it easier and simple to use.

Last year, UHC offered 10 presentation options. This year, it offers 14. In addition to the usual topics of alcohol, stress, sleep, contraception and more, UHC has added presentations on depression and anxiety, health literacy, healthy relationships and sexual communication. UHC may add presentations throughout the year as further feedback is received.

"Having a wide variety of health and wellness workshops and presentations available per request is important for a couple of reasons," said Jamie Porter, health promotions analyst at UHC. "First, we know that students' mental and physical health affects their ability to be successful students. Second, it's important that leadership of different groups can request these presentations because we can reach students who might not normally select to go to a health event themselves."

Requesting a presentation is easier than ever now that UHC has combined their requests forms.

“In the past, our different departments that offered presentations — Health Promotion and Outreach, Counseling and Psychological Services and Marketing — had separate request forms,” said Aimee Grindstaff, marketing strategist at UHC. “This summer, we built one form for all our presentations so that people don’t have to determine which of our departments they should contact to submit a request. It’s also helping us collaborate better as a staff and ensures no requests fall through the cracks.”

Presentation requests should be submitted at least 10 business days in advance, but staff will make every effort to fulfill presentation requests on a first-come, first-served basis as scheduling allows.

Although faculty and staff can submit a request for a student audience, UHC is not offering presentations to faculty and staff during the academic year. To view the full list of presentations and their descriptions or to book a presentation, visit http://health.unl.edu/presentations.
