Nebraska’s historically non-partisan legislative body and how state senators engage in civil discourse is the focus of a Nov. 19 panel at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

The discussion, which caps two weeks of Peace and Civility programming, will feature five state senators in a moderated panel. The event, which is free and open to the public, is 4 to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 19 in the Nebraska Union, Regency Suite B and C.

Senators who will share their experiences working across the aisle to generate legislation and set the biennial budget are Tom Brandt (District 32); Myron Dorn (District 30); Suzanne Geist (District 25); Patty Pansing Brooks (District 28); and Anna Wishart (District 27). The panel will be moderated by Rick Alloway, associate professor of broadcasting.

Adapted from a program developed by Minnesota’s Duluth Superior Areas Community Foundation, the university’s Peace and Civility project is intended to promote civil interactions and encourage dialogue across the campus community. It features nine simple tools — adapted from P. M. Forni’s book, “Choosing Civility” — for practicing civility.
