Smith Residence Hall president Oscar Canizales has been awarded the First-Year Experience Award by the National Association of College and University Residence Halls (NACURH).

Canizales, a criminology major from Wakefield, Nebraska, was recognized at the regional conference in February, which then qualified him to be considered at the national level for the award.

“I’m truly honored and humbled to receive the First-Year Experience Award from NACURH,” Canizales said. “This award is a reminder to keep pushing forward and always surround yourself with amazing people.”

As the world’s largest student-run organization, NACURH supports residence hall leaders in their efforts to make a positive impact on their campuses. The award, presented during the online national conference, May 22-24, recognized Canizales’ contributions as Smith Hall president and for his work as Speaker of the Senate on the RHA (Residence Hall Association) executive board.

Next year, Canizales will serve as the UNL RHA president under the guidance of RHA advisor Jacob Sherry.

“Oscar has worked incredibly hard this past year and I am very excited to see what he has in store for RHA,” Sherry said.
