It’s never too early to get a jumpstart on preparing for your future career. UNL Career Services has a multitude of events and services to assist students in building professional skills and career preparedness.

1  |  Create an account on Handshake. 

Handshake is the web platform used by the university and career services to assist in connecting you to employers and building your online professional presence. On Handshake you can find campus jobs, professional jobs and internship postings, submit your resume for interviews, explore career choices, and more. It’s smart to make an account to stay current on openings, skills wanted by employers, and update your resume with new experiences. Join Handshake.

2  |  Go to Resumania  

Taking place from 2 to 4 p.m. February 5, 2020, Resumania offers 15-minute drop-in sessions to get your resume reviewed by an employer or career coach. It’s a great opportunity to get direct feedback from employers about your resume, work experience, and free career coaching. More info.

3  |  Visit the Resume Lab 

If you need to create your first resume or want advice to fix issues in your existing resume, make a visit to the Resume Lab, located in the UNL Career Services office (225 Nebraska Union)You can get one-on-one help in building your resume from scratch and making sure it looks professional. For additional info on creating a functional resume, go to the Career Services resume guide to find tips or schedule an appointment.

4  |  University Career Fairs 

UNL’s spring career fair is February 11 & 12. This is an essential event for exploring the job market and networking with potential employers. For upcoming graduates preparing to head into the work force, fairs are an amazing opportunity to speak to multiple employers. Freshman and sophomore students can benefit  to go in order to familiarize yourself with the process and get acquainted with professional environments. It will also help lessen intimidation when the time comes to really land a job.  More info.

5   |  Suit-Up Events 

UNL regularly partners with stores such as JC Penney at the Gateway Mall to give discounts of up to 60% off to students to help build a professional wardrobe. One of these events is the perfect chance to stop by before an interview or career fair to make sure your closet will be as ready for a great new job as you are. 6  |  Arrange a Career Advising Appointment 

If you still feel nervous about beginning your career search, take the time to schedule an appointment with a dedicated Career Services Advisor. These trained individuals help students and alumni in all academic areas as you continue to make steps in your future career path. They can assist in finding a major, making career plans, searching for internships, and any other career-oriented issues.
