Wednesday, November 29, 2017 Pantry raises awareness of hunger on campus

2,247 items were donated to the Huskers Helping Huskers Pantry+ during Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Nov. 11-17, 2017.

The Huskers Helping Huskers Pantry+ at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln celebrated Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Nov. 11-17, 2017.

Activities included an information booth where nearly 100 students stopped by to gather information about the pantry, a UNL Snapchat takeover, and an open house at the pantry with 40 attendees. A fundraiser at Runza in the Nebraska Union raised $148 for the pantry and donations throughout the week totaled 2,247 items.

“This was our first time celebrating Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week,” said Megan Scherling, program coordinator for the pantry. “While we’d love to see the need disappear, we know it is important to educate the campus community and greatly appreciate their support.”

The Huskers Helping Huskers Pantry+ opened in January 2017 to offer necessities and housing assistance to students. Results from a 2015 student survey indicated 29 percent of respondents worried about having enough food to eat and 10 percent could rarely or never afford to eat balanced meals.

Donations are accepted year round in the Nebraska Union and other campus locations. Gifts also can be made online through the University of Nebraska Foundation.
